On Thursday, 01 September 2016, the Minister of Science and Technology, Mrs Naledi Pandor will join the Chief Executive Officer of the National Research Foundation (NRF), Dr Molapo Qhobela in celebrating research excellence at the annual NRF Awards ceremony.

The annual NRF Awards recognise and celebrate South African research excellence. Two categories of awards are presented, these being the ratings-based awards as well as the special recognition awards. The rating-linked awards are given to those researchers who have qualified for an A or P rating, as evaluated through the peer review-based NRF Rating System. The special recognition awards provide a platform for honouring researchers for career achievements and contributions to knowledge creation and dissemination, as well as capacity development and transformation.

The programme for the evening will commence with the presentation to the recipients of the of the following l awards: Research Excellence Award for Next Generation Researchers, Research Excellence Award for Early Career/Emerging Researchers and  Recognition of P-Rated Researchers Awards in Research Excellence, Award for Next Generation Researchers, Research Excellence Award for Early Career/Emerging researchers, and Recognition of P-Rated Researcher/Elsevier Young Scientist Award.

This will be followed by the presentation of the following awards:

  • Excellence in Science Engagement Award
  • Recognition of A-Rated Researchers
  • Hamilton Naki Award
  • Research Capacity Development and Transformation at South African Higher Education Institutions
  • NRF Excelleration Award for South African Research Institutions

The evening will conclude with the announcement of the 2016 Lifetime Achievement award for 2016.
