Science Forum South Africa 2023 to be held in Pretoria

Science Forum South Africa (SFSA) returns to the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research International Convention Centre (CSIR ICC) after three years, two when it was held online owing to the Covid-19 pandemic and, last year, owing to the World Science Forum in Cape Town.

Co-hosted by the Department of Science and Innovation and the Science Diplomacy Capital for Africa initiative, the SFSA will take place from 6 to 8 December, with a focus on how science, technology and innovation (STI) can help to address challenges such as climate change, food security, health care and energy.

The forum will be held under the theme "Igniting conversations about science – People, partnerships and priorities for the Decadal Plan", and will bring together the scientific community, government, industry and civil society for discussions on the role of science in society.  With the many crises facing the world today, the interface between science and society has never been more important.

Over 2 500 delegates will participate in sessions about the future of society, innovation shaping the industry of tomorrow, and STI enabling inclusive and sustainable development, among other themes.

The programme will feature plenary lectures and sessions involving leading South African and international scientists, experts and thought leaders.  There will also be an exhibition with key institutions and partners in the national system of innovation.

Starting on 4 December, there will be a series of side events leading up to the SFSA, including the BRICS STI Polity and Foresight Symposium; the Launch of the Review of Research, Development and Innovation of Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Technologies in South Africa Study; the Southern African Science Journalism Programme; the African Union Decade of African Roots and Diaspora: Southern Africa Regional Preparatory Conference for the 9th Pan-African Congress; and the Role of the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology in Education, Training and Funding for Africa.  To find out more about the side events visit
