Minister Nzimande to address conference on ICT for Africa's development

The benefits of digital transformation towards establishing e-governance in Africa are among the topics of discussion at the annual IST-Africa Conference, currently underway online.

The Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Dr Blade Nzimande, delivered the keynote address in a pre-recorded message at the 17th edition of the conference, focusing on the role of ICT, research and innovation on Africa's development.

Hosted by the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI), the conference provides a platform for showcasing technology-enabled activities on the continent, and will include topics such as ICT-enabled entrepreneurship, cybersecurity, e-health, next-generation computing, and the implications of technology for society.

It will also provide insights into policy issues related to research and innovation, cyberinfrastructure, the fourth industrial revolution, and the big data dimensions of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) telescope project, among others.

Co-funded under Horizon 2020, IST-Africa is a strategic collaboration of ministries and national councils responsible for innovation, science and technology policy and research in 18 African countries. It brings together senior representatives from leading public and private education and research organisations to discuss ICT policy, showcase research results, and share knowledge.
