Africa Day is marked annually on 25 May, the day the Organisation of African Unity, the precursor to the African Union, was founded in 1963.

Africa Day is intended to celebrate Africa's success in the fight against colonialism and apartheid and the progress it has made, as well as to reflect on the common challenges that the continent faces.

This year, the Department and its partners invite stakeholders in the national system of innovation and members of the public to celebrate Africa Day under the theme Africa Continental Free Trade Area: Opportunities for Science, Technology and Innovation.
