The Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Dr Blade Nzimande, will be receiving his coronavirus jab at the Edendale Hospital in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, today.

Minister Nzimande, like all South Africans, registered through the government portal as part of the over-60 age group being targeted in Phase 2 of South Africa's vaccination rollout.

Edendale Hospital is one of the hospitals in KwaZulu-Natal that will administer the COVID 19 vaccination.

It is the fourth biggest hospital in the country, with a total of 900 beds, and is designated as a regional hospital which offers district tertiary services.

At his previous visit to the hospital, Minister Nzimande said that he was satisfied with the hospital's level of preparedness to roll out COVID-19 vaccinations.

Minister Nzimande reiterated his call that the arrival of vaccines did not mean the relaxation of COVID-19 health protocols, which includes the wearing of masks, ventilation, sanitisation and physical distancing.

Members of the media are invited to join Minister Nzimande as follows:
