The National Advisory Council on Innovation (NACI) has congratulated the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits University) on its appointment of Prof. Zeblon Vilakazi as the new Vice-Chancellor, effective January 2021.

Prof. Vilakazi will replace Prof. Adam Habib, who is stepping down at the end of the year. The university announced the new appointment on 25 June.

"We are proud and elated about this appointment, which is an investment in the future of South Africa in general and the higher education, science and innovation system in particular," said Dr Mlungisi Cele, Acting CEO of NACI.

"This appointment comes at a critical historical conjuncture characterised by rampant and calamitous COVID-19, which is deepening the ecological crisis, economic crisis, and social reproduction," Dr Cele said.

"This pandemic has affected all institutions, including Wits University, challenging everyone to harness all our knowledge towards developing and implementing new innovations for a healthy society with improved livelihoods."

NACI believes the appointment of Prof. Vilakazi is inspiring and ushers in an era of innovative leadership that will shape knowledge generation and the development of South Africa's young population, contributing to a better world.

"We look forward to working with Wits University under the leadership of Prof. Vilakazi," Dr Cele concluded.
