The Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Dr Blade Nzimande, sends his heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Prof. Gita Ramjee, South Africa's world-renowned HIV researcher.
Prof. Ramjee passed away on Tuesday, 30th March 2020, due to complications related to COVID-19.
At the time of her passing she was the Chief Scientific Officer HIV Global at the Aurum Institute, and working on trials for a gel that could possibly reduce the transmission of HIV in young women.
Minister Nzimande said that Prof. Ramjee’s death robbed South Africans of one of the finest, tireless champions of science, research, women's reproductive health and rights and a champion of the national system of innovation.
