With less than a month to go to the 5th Science Forum South Africa (SFSA), the planning for the annual science, technology and innovation showcase is in full swing.

This year, the event has an additional dimension, with the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) hosting the SFSA together with the 3rd Innovation Bridge (IB) Technology Matchmaking and Showcasing Event.

Taking place under the theme, "Igniting conversations about science for innovation with impact", the collaboration will create a unique platform for debate on the role of science, technology and innovation in society. At the same time, local technologies generated from publicly financed research and development will be showcased with the aim of securing partners to convert these technologies into products and services that impact the lives of ordinary people.

Building on the success of previous SFSA events, Science Forum South Africa will again serve as a large, open, public platform for debating the science and society interface.

Innovation Bridge, now in its third year, is targeted at entrepreneurs, innovators and investors. Taking place on 5 December, the 3rd IB will host business-to-business meetings and speed networking sessions to provide a platform for concluding deals for tech advancement.

The five-day programme will kick off with side-events on 2 and 3 December, followed on 4 December by a high-level plenary, hosted by the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology, Dr Blade Nzimande, to mark the opening of SFSA and IB 2019.

The event will include a plenary discussion under the topic, "The South Africa, Africa and world we want to leave our children: A technologically wise next generation". The opening plenary will be followed by three rounds of parallel sessions.

On 6 December, the SFSA and IB will converge with a high-level panel discussion on the role of innovation in society from the perspective of driving local technological advancements while ensuring increased foreign direct investment. An interactive exhibition will also take place.
