Department of Science and Technology publish regulations to protect SA’s astronomy areas

The Minister of Science and Technology, Naledi Pandor, published the final regulations on the protection of the declared Karoo Central Astronomy Advantage Areas, under notice number 1411 on 15 December 2017, in Government Gazette number 41321.


The published regulations are as follow:


Schedule A is the regulations prohibiting and restricting the use of certain radio frequency spectrum and certain radio activities in the astronomy advantage areas while Schedule B is the regulations relating to the administrative matters regarding Schedule A.


Schedule C is the regulations relating to financial compensation procedures for the astronomy advantage areas; and Schedule D is the regulations restricting interference of electrical activities.



These Regulations shall become operational on a date to be determined by the Minister by notice in the Gazette, which date shall not be later than 365 calendar days after the date that these Regulations are published. The notice determining the date shall be published 90 calendar days before the date so determined.
