JAPAN INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION AGENCY

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY RESEARCH PARTNERSHIP FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

CALL FOR PROPOSALS 2014

In order to advance research and development into matters of global concern such as the environment, energy, bioresources, and disaster prevention, the Japanese government supplements the country's conventional approach to technology transfer with the sponsorship of joint research initiatives between Japanese universities and research institutions and their counterparts in developing countries, including South Africa.

There is a joint research funding scheme aimed at the promotion of international partnerships, jointly administered by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The scheme will involve participation by the South African Department of Science and Technology (DST) in respect of the pre-selection and submission of project proposals to the Japanese funding agencies.

The DST is therefore pleased to invite research proposals from South African researchers for the 2015/16 financial year.

Researchers are requested to note the following:

1.   Only project proposals in the following research themes will be

       consideredfor funding:

  • Environment/Energy.
  • Bioresources.
  • Disaster Prevention and Mitigation.

2.   Only project proposals submitted in both countries will be considered for

funding, thus necessitating prior coordination between the Japanese and

South African applicants. Japanese applications should be submitted online

at  http://www.e-rad.go.jp. Further information is available at

http://www.jst.go.jp/global/english/koubo.html html. Please note that most of

the information on this site applies to the Japanese applicant only. The South

African applicant is responsible only for submitting a counterpart proposal to

the DST. Note also that the deadline indicated on the website is not applicable

to South African applications, which must be submitted by 15 October 2014.

3.   The final decision concerning funding will be made exclusively by

the Japanese authorities. Proposals submitted in South Africa will be

subject to endorsement at government level. The South African government

will  then make recommendations for funding made to the Japanese

authorities. However, funding will be awarded unilaterally by the Japanese on

the basis of their procedures and criteria.

4.   The following information must be provided:

  • Full contact details of the applicant, including professional affiliations, race and gender.
  • A detailed description of the project, including the expected outcomes and significance of the research[1].
  • A detailed CV of the applicant, as well as an indication of previous collaborative activities undertaken between the applicant and their Japanese counterpart.

The completed application form should be submitted to Ms Gcino Mlaba, Deputy Director: Development Partnerships, Department of Science and Technology, either by post (Private Bag X894, Pretoria, 0001), by hand (Building 53, Scientia Campus, Meiring Naudé Road, Brummeria, Pretoria), or by email (This email address is being protected from spambots.
