Request for Proposals for the Production of SumbandilaSat Model for Space Awareness at schools
The appointed service provider will be required to produce a satellite model as required by Department of Science & Technology. This will enable school learners to build a replica of Sumbandilasat by following enclosed instructions to put together the designed pieces. In this way, it is hoped that they will be motivated and encouraged to learn more about space science and technology.
BACKGROUND
SumbandilaSat, South Africa's low earth orbiting (LEO) Earth observation micro-satellite was launched from Baikonur by the Russian Space Agency, Roscosmos, on 17 September 2009. The launch was the result of the Department of Science and Technology's three-year, integrated capacity-building and satellite development project.
SumbandilaSat means 'lead the way' in Tshivenda. The name, chosen via a national competition for secondary school learners, identifies the satellite as a South African project and brands the satellite as a major South African milestone in building our space heritage. Read more
