Dear Reader
This year we have a series of exciting articles lined up. In the next three volumes, you can expect updates on Nepad-related developments, as well as more on how we intend to bring science to youth and to free their potential in the sciences, particularly the historically disadvantaged individuals.

There will also be articles intended to address public fears or perceptions about biotechnology and explain its contribution towards development. Various science spheres will be celebrated during the year. In July, we will celebrate the biosciences, in September African origins and in October, Astronomy month. Readers can expect articles focused on the developments of these spheres of science in South Africa and in the rest of the world.

Given that the sciences are largely male-dominated,- with only 35 % of female scientists in the country - one issue of Innovation will be solely authored by women, giving our readers a fresh perspective.

We also keep you abreast of current strategies being developed in astronomy, nanotechnology and intellectual property. Watch Innovation for Development for further progress.

Remember to send in your contributions and opinions to Buhle.Khumalo@dst.gov.za, and put INNOVATION in the first sentence. Should you wish to be added to the mailing list, please send us your postal address.

Buhle Khumalo
