Minister Launches the UniZul Science Centre

22 November 2004

The Minister of Science and Technology, Mr Mosibudi Mangena, will deliver a keynote address at the official opening of the UniZul Science Centre. In 2003 the Department of Science and Technology granted R4.7 Million to 4 Science Centres in different parts of the country. R1.7 Million went to the UniZul Science Centre that is hosted by the University of Zululand, but located in Richards Bay. The building construction is now complete.

The Centre is staffed by fulltime personnel. Major clients of the Centre are schools, particularly those in the rural areas. The Centre is well equipped with interactive science exhibits. Among other things, the Centre utilises the exhibits to explain otherwise complex scientific concepts to learners in a more relaxed and interactive mode. The outreach arm of the Centre also travels to remote schools in the rural areas so as to enable them to experience practical science.
