Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Mosibudi Mangena, in partnership with Engen SA, handed over 30 computers to Kgwaratlou Secondary School at Ga-Mphahlele earlier today.

The handover forms part of the DST’s aim to expose as many young South Africans as possible to science and technology, and to bridge the digital divide.

Recognising Kgwaratlou’s matric exemption rate, which was the best in the former Lebowakgomo area in 2007, the Minister said that: “the donation of these computers here today will, I believe, strengthen and encourage you in your resolve to excel further.

“By enabling greater access to ICT hardware and software, I believe that a larger number of these outstanding young people will be motivated to further their studies and enter careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. In this way they will also be contributing directly to making our country internationally competitive in these fields” the Minister added.

All of the donated computers have been installed with open-source software, to enable learners and educators to change and improve the software applications in a manner that meets their specific needs and curriculum objectives.

In his address to the learners, Minister Mangena encouraged learners to make use of the number of programmes that had been put in place by the DST to enhance participation and performance in maths, science and technology.

This is in support of the national objective to improve grade 12 results and to enable more young people to study science, technology and engineering at tertiary level.

These programmes include the DST/Thuthuka youth camps, National Science Week as well as a number of science festivals and celebrations for the youth that are held throughout the year.

The Minister urged all students to dedicate themselves to their studies and to ensure the best for their future.

“Make good use of the opportunities that the government and companies like Engen are offering.”
