The Minister of Science and Technology, Naledi Pandor, received the Outstanding Educator Award at the Chancellor's Calabash Dinner, which was hosted by the University of South Africa in Midrand Thursday, 2 November 2017.

The award was presented to Minister Pandor by the Chancellor of the University of South Africa, former president Thabo Mbeki.

The Outstanding Educator Award, one of four categories, acknowledges the contribution of an outstanding educator who has excelled in or advanced teaching, learning, skills development and/or research in their area of expertise.

A premier annual event, the Chancellor's Calabash Awards are Unisa's way of recognising its alumni and other extraordinary South Africans.

Minister Pandor said she was humbled by the recognition.  Expressing her gratitude to the Unisa community and Chancellor, she said that, "Of the many roles that life has called on me to fulfil, I would consider those of mother and educator to be among the most treasured."

The other three categories are the Outstanding Alumnus Award, the Unisa Robben Island Alumnus Award and the Public Service Award.
