New measures to accelerate the commercialisation of local innovations will come under the spotlight in Johannesburg on 15 September when the Department of Science and Technology (DST) hosts the Innovation Bridge, a technology showcase and matchmaking event.

The event, hosted in partnership with the Technology Innovation Agency and the National Intellectual Property Management Office, offers a rare opportunity for publicly funded innovation projects to be presented to potential investors and commercialisation partners.

The Minister of Science and Technology, Naledi Pandor, will launch the South African Innovation Portal, as well as address a plenary session on the role of government, business and society in advancing South Africa's inclusive growth through innovation.

Speakers at the event will include industry players such as Mr Pavlo Phitidis, CEO of Aurik Business Incubator; Mr Vusi Thembekwayo, a global keynote speaker; and avid entrepreneurs such as Ms Matsi Modise, Managing Director of Simodisa, an industry association whose mission is to accelerate entrepreneurship by collaborating with policymakers in South Africa.

Innovation Bridge is the DST's key platform to catalyse the sustainable development of the innovation ecosystem. Experts at the event will elaborate on building sustainable innovative technology businesses, assess the local appetite for innovative solutions, and outline what investors seek in innovation.

In addition, potential investors and business partners will evaluate a range of new local innovations on show, including cosmetics and algal fuel products, new industrial isotope technology, 'ceiling in a can' construction polymers, clean energy stoves and higher-yield wind turbines.
