The Minister of Science and Technology, Mosibudi Mangena, will officially launch South Africa’s first two Nanotechnology Innovation Centres at the CSIR in Pretoria.
The first two centres have been established at the CSIR and Mintek by the Department of Science and Technology (DST). Activities at these centres are aligned to the focus of the DST’s Nanotechnology Strategy and each has its own research focus.
The focus of the CSIR centre, the National Centre for Nano-structured Materials, is on materials and energy research, while the centre at Mintek focuses on water, health mining and minerals.
These areas have been identified in the National Nanotechnology Strategy as key in the development of nanoscience and nanotechnology in order to effect social development.
Nanotechnology is profoundly impacting on our world today and is internationally acclaimed as having the potential to provide greater efficiency in energy use; help protect the environment by reducing waste and harmful emissions; and to solve major health problems.
Key stakeholders in South Africa’s National System of Innovation (NSI) and the private sector are expected to attend the event.
