South Africa’s objective to promote indigenous knowledge will take a step further when the Department of Science and Technology, launches a committee to advice government in this regard.
The Ministerial Advisory Committee on Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) was conceived to support the National IKS Office’s (NIKSO) national advisory function to the Minister of Science and Technology regarding strategic issues related to the protection, recognition, affirmation, development and promotion of IKS in South Africa.
Furthermore, the primary functions of the committee will be to:
- provide critical assessment of the extent to which the NIKSO carries out its mandate, including implementing the IKS policy in line with the DST’s mandate;
- review funding requirements;
- recommend alternative and additional sources of funding for the work of NIKSO;
- establish a strong working relationship with other relevant organisations such as the National Advisory Council on Innovation;
- oversee the independent evaluation of the NIKSO policies and programmes once every five years; provide advice on new developments and approaches to IKS and its integration within the National Systems on Innovation and policy on IKS; and
- advice on priority research in different areas of IKS, particularly on research and development.
